A 25-year-old man was shot in the face by a group of unidentified armed men in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram on Monday afternoon.
The incident took place around 4pm in the hatchery area of Barua Para under South Madarsha Union. The injured man was identified as Mohammad Arafat, son of Mohammad Ayub of Madunaghat area under Madhyam Madarsha Union.
According to local sources, several armed men chased Arafat from Madunaghat Bazar and shot him in the hatchery area before fleeing the scene. The sound of gunfire triggered panic among people in the surrounding area. Locals later rescued Arafat and took him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. He sustained a shotgun pellet injury to his face, but his condition was not serious, and he was discharged from the hospital after treatment.
Police sources said Arafat is a supporter of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League.
M. Nazim Uddin, a member of Ward No. 6 of South Madarsha Union Parishad, said he went to the scene after hearing the gunshots and receiving information from locals. He suspected that the shooting may have stemmed from a local dispute.
Ibrahim Ahmed, inspector of Madunaghat Police Outpost, said police visited the scene after receiving information about the incident. He said local people had already taken the injured man to hospital and that details would be provided after further investigation.
Kazi Md Tarek Aziz, additional superintendent of police of Hathazari Circle, said police were investigating who was involved in the incident and that further details would be available later.
