Bangladesh is open to the possibility of joining an economic or defence framework involving Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye, Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir has said.
In an interview with Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), Kabir said the government was pursuing a “Bangladesh First” policy and a balanced foreign policy with national interests at its core.
“Bangladesh maintains a positive approach towards the possibility of joining an economic or defence framework involving Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye, taking into account its own interests and the changing dynamics of the global economy and trade,” he told BSS.
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement earlier this month. The agreement commits the three countries to strengthening collective security and treating an armed attack against any one of them as an attack against all three, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry.
Kabir also said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to Riyadh, at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was likely to be finalised soon after the summer.
He said Bangladesh was also strengthening its working bilateral relationship with Pakistan through normal diplomatic engagement, focusing on trade and people-to-people connectivity.
