Business leaders and economists have called for increased credit flow to the private sector, lower inflation, improved investment conditions and faster economic reforms.

They made the call at a seminar organised by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in Dhaka on Saturday.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said the government was working to create a business-friendly environment and remove barriers to trade and investment.

He said the government had announced a Tk 60,000 crore incentive package under which eligible entrepreneurs would receive loan support. Political interference in the process would not be accepted, he added.

DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed said private-sector credit growth had fallen to around 5 per cent, while government borrowing growth stood at 25.9 per cent.

He called for stronger capital markets, improved logistics and uninterrupted services in industrial areas to boost investment and exports.

PPRC Executive Chairman Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman said the economy was at a critical juncture and called for stronger implementation of economic reforms.

Other speakers stressed the need to reduce business costs, improve energy supply, expand the tax base and ensure a stable and predictable investment environment.
