Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan has said that the quality of education at many private universities in Bangladesh is not satisfactory, stressing the need to identify such institutions and take necessary measures to improve their standards.

He made the remarks on Saturday (August 22) as the chief guest at the closing session of a two-day Vice Chancellors’ Dialogue held at BRAC CDM in Savar. The event was organised under the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) project being implemented by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The minister said universities must expand research opportunities to ensure overall improvement in education, as there is no alternative to research for advancing the sector. He said the government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is placing emphasis on research and has already allocated 2 percent of GDP to education in the budget, with plans to gradually raise the allocation to 5 percent.

“If we cannot establish research-oriented universities, progress in education will not be possible,” he said, urging the UGC to ensure that private universities also create greater opportunities for research.

Referring to the concept of “reverse brain drain,” Milan said Bangladeshi teachers and students achieve excellent results abroad and make significant contributions to research. He stressed the need to bring such talent back to the country and utilise their expertise.

UGC Chairman Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed presided over the event, while former Public Service Commission Chairman Professor Z N Tahmida Begum attended as a special guest.
