Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan has said keeping the city clean cannot be achieved by the city corporation alone and requires public awareness and cooperation.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a special Clean Week programme in front of the DNCC’s Zone-3 regional office in Mohakhali on Saturday.
Shafiqul said the cleanliness campaign would not be limited to a single day but would continue as an ongoing process. As part of the long-term plan to build a “Clean Dhaka, Green Dhaka”, Clean Week has been announced in every DNCC zone, he said.
He said cleanliness workers at ward and unit levels were carrying out their routine duties every day. However, given the city’s large geographical area and population, keeping Dhaka clean was not possible for the city corporation alone.
He urged residents to avoid throwing tissues and other waste on roads and in public places. If everyone keeps their homes and surrounding areas clean, the target could be achieved ahead of schedule, he said.
After the inauguration, a rally was held as part of the Clean Week programme, led by Shafiqul Islam and the Prime Minister’s Assistant Private Secretary Abdur Rahman Sani.
DNCC Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Md Humayun Kabir, Secretary Md Asaduzzaman and other senior officials were present.
