Nearly 1,000 underprivileged women, men and children from the Vasantek, Korail and Sat Tola slum areas in the capital received free eye examinations, cataract screening and necessary healthcare services on Saturday.

The day-long programme was inaugurated by Dr Zubaida Rahman, vice president of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation.

BNP Standing Committee member and Executive Director of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation Professor Dr Farhad Halim Donar, the foundation's Director (Programme) and orthopaedic surgeon Professor Shah Mohammad Aman Ullah, Director (Programme) Engineer Md Mahbub Alam, Director (Programme) agriculturist Dr Khandaker Mahfuzul Haque Bachchu, Director Engineer AKM Zahirul Islam, life member Rezaur Rahman Chowdhury Sumon, Dr Sayeed Mehebub Qadir, Sohel Ahmed, and other physicians, officials and volunteers were present at the programme.

Around 1,000 people received free eye examinations, consultations with doctors and necessary healthcare services. Medicines and eyeglasses were also provided to patients based on medical advice.

Cataract patients were identified during the programme, and arrangements were made for free surgery where necessary.

Dr Zubaida Rahman's presence and inauguration of the programme encouraged the participating patients, physicians, volunteers and local residents.

The organisers said a large number of low-income people are unable to receive necessary eye care on time due to financial constraints. The initiative was undertaken particularly to provide treatment to people suffering from cataracts and vision-related problems.

They said the programme was organised out of a sense of humanitarian responsibility so that no one would be deprived of necessary eye care because of financial hardship.

The organisers also said the Ziaur Rahman Foundation would continue its healthcare and other humanitarian initiatives for underprivileged communities as part of its ongoing public welfare activities.

Patients and local residents who received treatment at the programme expressed gratitude to the organisers for the initiative.
