Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on US goods from September 8 as a trade dispute between the two longtime allies escalates.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the measures after the United States imposed a 50 per cent tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.

Speaking in Ottawa on Saturday, Carney said Canada would match the new US tariffs “dollar for dollar” to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.

The Canadian tariffs will target US steel, dairy products, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, electronics and other goods. The government is expected to provide details of the measures in the coming days.

The new US tariffs cover products including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing rods and hockey equipment. They affect about 5.5 per cent of Canadian exports to the US.

Carney said talks with Washington had broken down after the US proposed terms that Canada considered unfair and economically damaging. He said the demands also sought to limit Canada’s ability to pursue new trade agreements.

“We cannot accept what they’ve offered, and we will not give what they’ve asked,” Carney said.

US President Donald Trump criticised the Canadian move in a post on Truth Social, saying Canada wanted the benefits of being a US state without becoming one.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said no new talks with Canada were planned and that Washington would respond to the Canadian tariffs.

Carney, one of the few world leaders to retaliate against US tariffs, has pledged to strengthen Canada’s trade and military ties with other countries and reduce its dependence on the US.

Canada sends nearly 70 per cent of its exports to the US, making the country particularly vulnerable to the escalating trade dispute.

Carney said the Canadian government would announce support measures next week for industries affected by the new US tariffs, with the assistance potentially continuing for years.

The new tariffs are expected to raise costs and affect employment in Canada. Canadian businesses, particularly small and medium-sized firms, could face increased pressure, according to analysts.

The dispute has also drawn criticism in the US. Democratic lawmakers and governors in border states have accused Trump of creating uncertainty that could increase costs for American businesses and consumers.

The Business Roundtable, which represents about 200 major US companies, warned that the tariffs could raise costs for American businesses and families and urged Washington and Ottawa to resume negotiations.
