Different courts in Narayanganj and Sirajganj districts sentenced seven people to life imprisonment over separate murder incidents.
NARAYANGANJ: A court in Narayanganj on Sunday sentenced Mozammel Haque, alias Babu, 35, to life imprisonment for beating and hacking an elderly man to death in 2019.
Narayanganj Additional Sessions Judge Nahid Niazi of the Sixth Court declared the verdict in the presence of the convict. Babu was also sentenced to six months of rigorous imprisonment for failing to pay a fine of Tk 10,000.
According to the prosecution, Abul Hossain, 60, was fatally assaulted on May 12, 2019, following an argument over mangoes from a tree at his in-laws' home in Narapadi area of Bandar. He was taken to Narayanganj General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Abul's son, Kajal Mia, filed a case with Bandar Police Station.
Additional Public Prosecutor KAM Tutul Chowdhury said the family welcomed the verdict. Court Police Inspector Md Abdus Samad confirmed the verdict.
SIRAJGANJ: A court in Sirajganj on Sunday sentenced six people, including a woman, to life imprisonment for the 2020 murder of farmer Sanowar Hossain.
Sirajganj District and Sessions Judge Iqbal Hossain declared the verdict in the presence of the convicts. Each was also fined Tk 20,000 and sentenced to six months in prison in default.
The convicts are Mahmudul Hasan, Rubel Mia, Manik Hossain, Shariful Islam, Rabeya Khatun and Shahadat Hossain.
According to the prosecution, Manik borrowed Tk 2.2 lakh from Sanowar and later called him on July 8, 2020, promising to repay the money. Sanowar went missing after the meeting. Four days later, locals found his body floating in the Surjo River in Ullapara Upazila.
Sanowar’s wife, Selina Khatun, filed a murder case with Ullapara Police Station. Police later charged the six and submitted a charge sheet on April 30, 2022.
