Concerts may be cancelled for various reasons, including security concerns, and such decisions should not automatically be seen as government opposition or non-cooperation, Information and Broadcasting Minister Andalib Rahman said on Tuesday.

He said the government had no intention of obstructing or disrupting cultural activities.

The minister made the remarks in response to a question from reporters at a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday on the progress of various government activities.

Asked about alleged opposition from local religious leaders to cultural programmes in Brahmanbaria and Kishoreganj, Andalib said a concert being cancelled did not necessarily mean that the government had failed to cooperate.

“There may have been security concerns or other issues. We can speak to the relevant ministry to find out what happened,” he said.

He said concerts could be cancelled for various reasons and that such decisions were not always taken because of objections from any particular group.

Bangladesh is currently hosting many concerts, including large-scale events, he said, adding that security concerns at a particular venue had to be considered separately.

“There is no intention on the part of our government to obstruct or disrupt any cultural activity,” the minister said.
