Education exchange to strengthen Bangladesh-China ties: Adviser Mahdi Amin

Education exchange can serve as a key platform for strengthening people-to-people ties between Bangladesh and China, Prime Minister’s Education Adviser Mahdi Amin has said.

“We want to deepen the bond between the people of the two countries, and education exchange can be the biggest medium for achieving that. Our students will have opportunities to pursue higher education and research in China, while Chinese students can come to Bangladesh to participate in summer schools and various academic activities on our campuses,” he said.

Mahdi Amin made the remarks on Wednesday afternoon local time at the China-Bangladesh Education Exchange Conference held at South China Normal University in Guangzhou, China.

At the same event, Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Haque Milan called for deeper and more structured educational partnerships between Bangladesh and China. He stressed long-term cooperation among universities through joint research, scholarships, student and faculty exchanges, short-term training, and joint master’s and PhD programmes.

He also encouraged institutions from both countries to build sustainable academic partnerships, according to a press release.

The conference concluded with a strong commitment from both sides to expand university cooperation, academic exchanges and long-term educational partnerships between China and Bangladesh.

Earlier in the morning, a meeting on China-Bangladesh education cooperation was held, focusing on four key areas: opportunities for Bangladeshi students to study in China, mutual cooperation among universities, joint research, and technical education and skills development.

At the afternoon conference, Mahdi Amin highlighted the advantages of China’s current education system and said regular coordination was taking place with Chinese institutions to further improve the academic environment and facilities available to Bangladeshi students already studying in China.

Stressing that simply sending students abroad would not be enough, the adviser emphasised joint research and technology transfer. He said Bangladesh needed joint research and laboratory-sharing initiatives to benefit from the experience of Chinese universities, which have made significant progress in research and global rankings.

He particularly highlighted China’s experience in technical education and polytechnic sectors, saying that using this expertise to train Bangladeshi teachers could bring significant practical changes to the country’s education system.

Mahdi Amin expressed hope that the partnership would go beyond theoretical discussions in classrooms and bring together the talent and expertise of the two countries in institutional and practical fields.

He also highlighted Bangladesh’s growing educational needs and stressed the importance of strengthening academic links with leading Chinese universities, particularly in technical education, research collaboration, university partnerships and Chinese-language education.

The adviser called for the establishment of “Chinese Language Centres” in Bangladesh with support from Chinese universities. Such centres, he said, could provide qualified teachers, structured courses, learning materials and institutional support.

He also invited Chinese government officials and university representatives to visit Bangladesh to gain a better understanding of the country’s education sector, engage directly with Bangladeshi institutions and explore practical opportunities for long-term academic and institutional cooperation.

The Bangladesh delegation also included Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Haque Milan and Md Daud Mia, secretary of the Technical and Madrasa Education Division of the Ministry of Education.

Among the Chinese participants were Xu Shimin, chief provincial inspector of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education; Zhou Liuyu, deputy director of the Office of Exchange and Cooperation; engineer Sheikh Korban Ali, vice-president of the China-Bangladesh Education and Culture Association; Wang Peng, joint secretary of the association; adviser Zheng Pengwu; and Professor Yang Chengwei, vice president of South China Normal University.
