More than 50 people were reportedly injured in a clash over spectators’ seating arrangements during a football match in Kishoreganj. The incident took place on Friday afternoon at the Gurui playing field in Nikli upazila.

Abul Mansur Mamun, a resident of the Gurui area and joint organizing secretary of the Nikli upazila BNP, said, ''the Gurui Nobojagoron Unnayan Sangha had organized a football tournament featuring 16 teams from Nikli and Bajitpur upazilas. The tournament has been held for the past seven years. Mamun is one of the patrons of the organization."

The final match between teams from Hilchia and Sararchar unions of Bajitpur was scheduled for Friday afternoon. Several thousand spectators attended the match. Both teams had scored one goal each.

During the match, some disorder broke out over where spectators were sitting. Volunteers went to the area to bring the situation under control, but an uproar ensued. Soon afterward, spectators began fighting indiscriminately and throwing chairs.

Around 50 people were injured in the clash and the ensuing panic and stampede. However, no weapons were used, so no one sustained serious injuries.

Mamun said, ''several police officers attend each match as spectators. They were also present on Thursday. However, he said, there was little they could do at the time. He added that a meeting involving all sides would be held on Sunday in an attempt to arrange the final match again."

When asked about the fight, Shafiqul Islam, Inspector (Investigation) of Nikli Police Station, said, “We have not received any report about the incident. However, we will go if we are called.”
