Prioritise education to build drug-free society: Anee

LAXMIPUR, Aug 29: Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has urged young people to remain vigilant against drugs, saying education is being prioritised to build a drug-free society.

“We are prioritising education to build a drug-free society. Drugs have been brought into our country from neighbouring countries with the aim of making our nation intellectually bankrupt. They are conspiring to destroy our image, achievements and intellectual potential,” he said.

The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a reception for students who achieved GPA-5 in the SSC and equivalent examinations in Sadar and Chandraganj upazilas.

The event was organised by Laxmipur  Society at the Town Hall auditorium on Saturday afternoon.

Anee said the government wanted young people to remain alert and vigilant against drugs.

“If we can prioritise education, we will be able to free society from moral degradation,” he said.

The minister said the government was running the country amid economic hardship.

“We took responsibility after the election at a time when the country was in ruins,” he said, adding that Honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was giving considerable importance to education and healthcare.

“Ensuring that educational activities continue in an environment free from cheating is also part of our challenge,” Anee said.
The programme was chaired by Laxmipur Society President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy.

Laxmipur  Deputy Commissioner SM Mehedi Hasan, Laxmipur  Science and Technology University Vice-Chancellor Dr Hanif Murad, District Council Administrator Shahab Uddin Sabu and Laxmipur  Government College Principal Prof Md Yusuf, among others, attended the event.
