A man was robbed of Tk 39 lakh in broad daylight in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi after withdrawing the money from a bank.

One alleged snatcher, carrying a pistol, was caught by local residents, while police later detained two more suspected members of the same gang, police said.

The incident took place in the Dhanmondi Lake area on Monday afternoon. Police were continuing their operation as of the filing of this report.
The man detained at the scene was identified as Tanvir Abedin Jewel, 41.

Police arrested him after receiving a call through the National Emergency Service 999. Based on information obtained from his interrogation, several teams from Dhanmondi Police Station and a team of the Detective Branch (DB) conducted a joint operation and detained two more suspected members of the gang.

Police, however, could not immediately provide their identities.

Anwar Sattar, police inspector and media and public relations officer of the National Emergency Service 999, said a caller informed the emergency service that three snatchers on a motorcycle had taken away a bag containing Tk 39 lakh from a man who had withdrawn the money from a bank.

The victim chased the alleged snatchers after the incident. At one stage, one of them fell from the motorcycle and was caught by local residents, who detained him along with a pistol.

After receiving the information, the 999 service immediately alerted Dhanmondi Police Station to take necessary action.

Constable Mujibur Rahman, a call taker at the emergency service, received the call, while police dispatcher Sub-Inspector Md Zahidul Islam maintained constant communication with the caller and the concerned police station.

A team from Dhanmondi Police Station later arrived at the scene and took Jewel into custody along with the pistol.

Police said operations were continuing to determine whether others were involved in the robbery and to recover the snatched money.
