Bangladesh and India have resumed discussions over Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's possible visit to India, although no date has yet been finalised, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir said on Tuesday.

Speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he said the prime minister would visit India but there was no possibility of the trip taking place before he attends the United Nations General Assembly.

Kabir said no final programme or itinerary had yet been set for the visit.

He also said Bangladesh viewed positively the intervention by Indian authorities that led to the cancellation of a meeting of Awami League leaders in India on August 29.

The state minister said Bangladesh would not provide shelter to criminals or fugitives fleeing from India and expressed hope that India would take the same position regarding fugitives from Bangladesh.

He stressed the need for cooperation between the two countries to ensure that neither becomes a safe haven for criminals.

On Bangladesh's possible purchase of Boeing aircraft from the United States, Kabir said the decision was being considered based on the country's own needs and was not the result of any external pressure.

He said the proposed aircraft purchase was linked to Bangladesh's plans to expand its aviation sector, improve international connectivity and develop the country into an important regional aviation hub.
