Woman dies from electrocution in Rajbari

A woman body was found dead in a sugarcane field in the Char Daulatdia area of Goalanda upazila in Rajbari.

Local residents recovered her body at around 10:00 PM last night.

The decesed was identified as Nabiran Begum,58, was the wife of Rahim Sheikh of the Ainuddin Mridha neighborhood in Char Daulatdia Union of the upazila.

According to locals, the woman went to her paddy field at around 3:00 PM (September 2). Adjacent to her paddy field was a sugarcane field owned by Abdul Rafiq, which had been surrounded by an electrified wire to prevent theft. The woman reportedly came into contact with the wire and died.

After discovering the incident, the owner of the sugarcane field, Abdul Rafiq, allegedly buried the woman’s body in a hole along the edge of the field and covered the spot with sugarcane leaves. When she did not return home on time, her family began searching for her. At around 9:30 PM, they eventually found her body buried at the site, with her hands and feet reportedly tied.

Following the discovery, Abdul Rafiq allegedly began approaching local influential figures. At one point, former ward BNP leader Abu Taleb reportedly intervened and settled the matter by paying Tk 400,000 to the woman’s family to avoid legal complications.

Goaland Ghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shafiqul Islam said, “After the body was recovered last night, the family informed us that it was a natural death and that they had no complaints. However, this morning, we learned that the death may not have been natural and that a financial transaction had taken place in connection with the incident. The cause of death will be known after the autopsy.
