At least 30 students and guardians were injured when a school picnic bus collided head-on with a passenger bus in Baraigram upazila of Natore on Thursday morning.
The accident occurred around 10am on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul Highway in the Manikpur area. The injured were students and guardians of the Sirajganj branch of Shahin School, who were travelling to Safina Park in Rajshahi for a picnic. They were travelling in a convoy of 20 buses when their bus collided with a Dhaka-bound Al Taufiq Paribahan bus coming from Natore.
Firefighters from Bonpara Fire Service, members of the highway police and local residents rescued the injured and took them to Baraigram Upazila Health Complex and nearby private hospitals for treatment. The names of 17 injured people have so far been identified, including students Sinha Islam, 7, Dighi Khatun, 12, Habiba Khatun, 12, and Kabya Hossain, 12.
Sub-Inspector Alamgir Hossain of Bonpara Highway Police Station said the two buses involved in the accident had been taken into police custody. Legal action would be taken in connection with the incident.
