Police have arrested Sazzad Hossain Swapan, senior joint general secretary of the Cumilla South District unit of the Awami League and former chairman of Burichang Upazila Parishad.
He was arrested from his residence in the Jhautala, western bank of Dharmasagar area of Cumilla city at around 3pm on Friday (September 4).
Police said several cases have been filed against Sazzad Hossain Swapan over the killing of students during the anti-discrimination student movement and other incidents. He has also been accused of spreading various forms of misinformation on social media and conducting organisational activities involving Awami League leaders and activists over the past several months.
Police said some Awami League leaders and activists from Burichang upazila had recently been brought to his residence on the western bank of Dharmasagar, where they allegedly carried out organisational activities. Sazzad Hossain was also accused of spreading misinformation against the government on social media and causing public confusion.
Sazzad Hossain Swapan contested the 2024 national parliamentary election from the Cumilla-5 (Burichang-Brahmanpara) constituency as an Awami League candidate.
Touhidul Anwar, officer-in-charge of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station, said Swapan was arrested from his residence around 3pm on Friday and taken to the police station. He faces several cases, including those related to the killing of students during the anti-discrimination student movement. He will be sent to court after completion of the legal process.
He added that police had also received allegations that Swapan had been spreading various forms of misinformation on social media over the past several months.
