India Has no info on PM Tarique's visit: Randhir Jaiswal

Uncertainty remains over Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India in connection with the BRICS summit.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and senior government officials have repeatedly said that the visit will take place once a suitable environment is ensured. India has now said that it has no new information regarding Tarique Rahman’s possible visit.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks during the ministry’s regular briefing on Friday (September 4).

Asked about the possibility of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visiting India, the spokesperson said, “We have no new information on this.”

Meanwhile, responding to another question about ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity and has been giving a series of media interviews from India, Jaiswal said, “No comments.”

Sheikh Hasina fled to India after being ousted in the July uprising of 2024 and remains there. Both the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus and the current BNP government have explicitly urged India not to allow Sheikh Hasina to use its territory to conduct political activities.

However, on August 5, marking the second anniversary of the July uprising, Sheikh Hasina virtually joined a press conference in New Delhi. Prior to the event, the Bangladesh government had requested the Indian government to take all necessary measures to prevent her from participating in such an event.

However, India’s failure to take appropriate action has created renewed complications in relations between the two countries.
