Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that there is no need for any community or group of people living in Bangladesh to be identified as a “minority.” Rather than being divided on the basis of religion or any other distinction, every person in the country will enjoy equal rights and security based on their citizenship.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at an event held at Dhakeshwari National Temple in the capital on Friday (September 4) to mark Janmashtami.

The home minister said, “Our primary and foremost identity should be that we are all Bangladeshis.”

Expressing his commitment to building a non-communal Bangladesh, Salahuddin Ahmed said, “Our leader has clearly said, ‘Bangladesh first.’ And if Bangladesh comes first, then each of us is a Bangladeshi first. Our religious, social or ethnic identities come afterward. The government’s fundamental principle in running the state is a Bangladesh for everyone.”

Criticising the political system of the past, he said, “Those who previously believed, or sought political gains by claiming, that followers of the Hindu faith were the ‘vote bank’ of a particular political party have had that misconception and fabricated narrative completely shattered by the conscious people of this country.”

He said that since the current government took office, the religious freedom and observance of people of all faiths have been ensured over the past six months. “The people are the judges. You have already delivered your verdict, and in the future as well, you will play a united role in strengthening democracy and standing against all forms of evil forces and extremism,” he said.
