Venomous snake rescued from RU dormitory

A venomous Common Krait was rescued from above a mosquito net in a room at Shahid Shamsuzzoha Hall of the University of Rajshahi (RU). Students spotted the snake in Room No. 121 at around 2:30 AM on Friday (September 4).

According to reports, after noticing the snake, the students contacted SWAN, a volunteer organization. Within a few minutes of receiving the call, volunteers from the organization arrived at the scene. The snake was subsequently rescued safely following instructions from the Forest Department.

Two volunteers, Samit and Sazzad, rescued the snake. The rescuers said it was a “Common Krait,” locally known as ‘Pati Kalach’ or ‘Pati Keute,’ and that it is venomous.

Sazzad Sheikh, organizing secretary of Save Wildlife and Nature and one of the rescuers, said that kraits may sometimes enter homes and climb onto beds in search of food or shelter. To prevent such snakes from entering living spaces, people are advised to keep their homes clean and tidy and to tuck mosquito nets securely under the mattress or around the bed before sleeping at night.

SWAN has also issued a warning, urging people not to attempt to catch or touch wild animals under any circumstances without proper training and guidance from the Forest Department. Doing so could result in snakebites or other unwanted accidents.
