16 students suddenly fell ill during classes at Tamaraddi Jorkhali High School in Hatia Upazila of Noakhali. 13 of them have been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex.The incident took place between 11 am and 12 noon on Monday (September 7).
Among the sick are: Fatima Begum (12), Nipa Akhter (12), Farhana Akhter (12), sixth graders Meherab Uddin (11), eighth graders Suraiya Akhter (13) and tenth graders Parvin Akhter (15) and 13 others.
According to school sources, the class started at 10 am. An hour later, four seventh graders suddenly fainted. They would recover upon returning home. Shortly after, 12 more students from sixth, seventh and tenth grades fell ill and were taken to the hospital.
Headmaster of the school, Jasim Uddin, said that 13 students admitted to the hospital,where they were given saline, and have since recovered. However, the cause of the sudden illness has yet to be determined.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Russell Iqbal, said that the scene has been inspected. Initially, it was believed that this might have something to do with the foul smell in the classroom, but no conclusive answer was found as to what caused the string of illnesses and fainting at the school. As of writing, the matter is still being investigated.
