A man from Narayanganj was sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping and murdering his nephew.
A court in Narayanganj has sentenced Masum Billah (29) to life imprisonment for kidnapping and killing his 12-year-old nephew Rifat in Rupganj and demanding ransom. At the same time, the court also sentenced him to six months in prison for failing to pay a fine of Tk 50,000.
Narayanganj Additional Sessions Judge 5th Adat Judge AKM Rakibul Hasan announced the verdict in the presence of the accused on Monday (September 7) afternoon. Narayanganj Court Police Inspector Md. Abdus Samad confirmed the truth of the verdict.
The convicted, Masum Billah, is the son of Md. Zakir Hossain of Baldia area, and he lived in South Ruposhi area of Narayanganj.
The victim, Rifat Hossain was the son of Russell Molla of Baldia area under Nesarabad police station in Pirojpur. He lived in a rented house with his mother and two sisters in South Ruposhi area.
Rifatwas a sixth-grader, studying of the local Kazi Mohiuddin Model High School. And alarmingly enough, MasumBillah, his murderer, was his uncle.
Additional Public Prosecutor of the court, Advocate Md. Manik Mia, said that this is a sensational murder case. At the time of the incident on March 31, 2025, the Ramadan fast was going on. The child had left the house to offer Zuhr prayers after fasting. At that time, his uncle MasumBillah, who was related to him, kidnapped the child and demanded a ransom of Tk. 40 thousand. However, the mother refused, unwilling to pay the ransom. In response, Masum Billah killed his nephew via strangulation, and left him in an abandoned house.
After receiving the news of the recovery of the body that night, the Prosecutor added that the mother, Sufia Akhtar went to the spot and identified her son's body. Meanwhile, after this incident, uncle Masum Billah would surrender himself to the police station in his village Pirojpur. He also gave a confessional statement. The court has since announced the verdict in this case.
