A writ petition has been filed with the High Court challenging the legality of a government notification banning all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated organisations.

The petition was listed at serial No. 60 on Monday before a High Court bench comprising Justice J B M Hassan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan.

Deputy Attorney General Nur Mohammad Azmi, who is attached to the court, said the petition could not be heard as the court proceedings ended before reaching the serial.

The Public Security Division of the Home Ministry issued the notification on May 12, 2025.

It banned all activities of the Awami League and its associate, affiliated and fraternal organisations until the trials of their leaders and activists before the International Crimes Tribunal are completed.

Under the notification, all forms of publications and campaigns through the media, online platforms and social media were prohibited.

It also banned rallies, meetings, gatherings, conferences and other activities by the organisations.

A person named Md Al Amin filed the writ challenging the legality of the notification. His address was mentioned as Sreenagar in Munshiganj.

The petitioner sought a rule asking why the May 12, 2025 notification should not be declared to have been issued without lawful authority.
