Soldier Piyas laid to rest in Noakhali

NOAKHALI, Sept 10: Soldier Abu Bakar Siddiq Piyas, who was killed in a tank accident during a training exercise in Chattogram's Hathazari on Wednesday, was buried with state honour at Malipara Village in Noakhali's Kabirhat Upazila on Thursday.

His Namaz-e-Janaza was held at around 1:30pm at Malipara Village under Sundalpur Union, followed by his burial with a guard of honour. Family members, relatives and local residents attended the funeral.

Piyas, the only son of Abdul Wahab of Malipara Village, is survived by his wife and 18-month-old daughter, Fatema Akter.

The family said Piyas lived with his wife and daughter in accommodation at the Chattogram Cantonment because of his job. His daughter was born around a year and a half ago.

His uncle Mosharaf Hossain said Piyas had many dreams for his daughter.

“He left behind his young daughter before she could understand what a father's love means,” he said.

Piyas's brother-in-law Abu Saeed said he was the only son in the family and was known for his friendly nature.

“He always spoke to everyone with a smile and never behaved badly with anyone. We cannot accept his untimely death,” he said.

Local resident Ebad Ullah said Piyas was well-liked in the area.

“The most painful thing is that he had to leave behind such a young daughter,” he said.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the accident occurred during regular training at the Hathazari Field Firing Range on Wednesday.

Two army personnel were killed at the scene when an accident occurred while a tank was firing during the exercise, ISPR said.
Kabirhat Upazila Nirbahi Officer Pudom Pushpa Chakma said the death of a young soldier serving the country was deeply tragic.
