'Forced to take to streets for people’s rights'

Opposition Leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said his party was forced to take to the streets to secure the rights of the people as the government allegedly prevents them from raising public grievances in parliament. 

''The people are not well, and the country is not well either. The electricity and fertiliser crises have reached an extreme level, and people are suffering.''

Shafiqur made the remarks on Saturday morning while addressing a gathering at a local madrasa ground in Manikpotal (Morichtala) village of Dhunat upazila in Bogura.

“We are trying to raise the people’s suffering in parliament, but the government is not allowing us to speak. We have been forced to take to the streets to secure the rights of the people.''

Earlier, the Jamaat chief visited the grave of Abdul Malek in the same village, who is known as the first martyr of the Islamic education movement. 

After the grave visit, Shafiqur held an exchange of views with members of Abdul Malek’s family at a local madrasa.
