Tareque Rahman emerged as democratic, humane PM: Murad

Dhaka District Council Administrator Yayachin Ferdous Murad has said Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has emerged as a democratic and humane leader by following the ideals of his father, former president Ziaur Rahman, and mother, former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

He made the remarks at a brief rally before a procession organised by Dhamrai upazila BNP and its affiliated and associate organisations on Saturday to mark the BNP’s 48th founding anniversary.

Murad, also president of Jubo Dal’s Dhaka district unit, said Ziaur Rahman had played a key role in establishing multi-party democracy and restoring press freedom in the country. He said Ziaur Rahman had also contributed to Bangladesh’s political, economic and diplomatic progress before being killed in what he described as a conspiracy.

He said Khaleda Zia later took up the struggle for democracy and, after a nine-year movement, helped end military rule and establish parliamentary democracy.

Murad said BNP governments had repeatedly inherited fragile economies and other crises, adding that Tareque Rahman had also taken charge of the country amid economic and other challenges left by the previous government.

He expressed hope that Tareque Rahman would succeed in overcoming the challenges and lead Bangladesh towards democracy, development and prosperity.

Former Dhamrai municipality BNP general secretary Khandaker Abu Taher Mukut chaired the programme. BNP leaders Professor MA Jalil, Enayet Hossain, Abdus Salam, Ibadul Haque Zahid and Khurram Chowdhury Tutul, among others, were present.
