A large section of Sylhet district and metropolitan BNP leaders and activists boycotted a civic reception for President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir organised by Sylhet City Corporation on Tuesday.
The president received the civic reception during his first visit to Sylhet after taking office. However, BNP leaders and activists, including those from its affiliated organisations, did not attend the programme.
Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Emdad Hossain Chowdhury said the programme was boycotted because a civic committee was not formed through a proper process and the organisers acted arbitrarily.
“The event has been described as a civic reception, but it was not organised by any civic committee. It was an event of Sylhet City Corporation centred around a single person,” he said.
However, metropolitan BNP, Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal and Swechchhasebak Dal leaders and activists welcomed the president at seven points at the city’s entry routes.
The president arrived in Sylhet around 11:30am and visited the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) and Shah Paran (RA).
He joined the civic reception at Sylhet Nagar Bhaban around 3:30pm.
Security was tightened across the city ahead of the president’s visit. He is scheduled to return to Dhaka later on Tuesday.
