The High Court has directed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to take necessary action against unregistered online news portals and social media pages that spread rumours, false information and misleading content.
The court also issued a rule asking why the inaction of the relevant authorities in taking action against such unregistered online news portals and social media pages should not be declared without lawful authority. It further asked why appropriate measures should not be taken against them.
The High Court bench comprising Justice Raziq-Al-Jalil and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury passed the order on Tuesday (September 15) after the preliminary hearing of a writ petition seeking action against the platforms.
Advocate SM Zulfikar Ali Juna, who filed the writ petition, appeared for the petitioner during the hearing.
The public-interest writ petition was filed by Advocate SM Zulfikar Ali Juna, chairman of the National Lawyers Council.
