Bakery product prices to remain unchanged for now

The planned price hike for bakery products, including biscuits and bread, has been put on hold following a meeting between the government and business leaders on Tuesday.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir at the Ministry of Commerce in the evening.

The meeting discussed the businesses’ recent announcement to raise bakery product prices and the costs involved in production and marketing. Representatives of relevant business organisations attended the meeting.

A committee led by the chairman of the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission has been formed to review production and marketing costs, raw material prices, taxes and duties and other relevant issues.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within seven days. Further decisions will be taken after reviewing the issues based on the report.

The government said it would take steps to keep the market stable, giving the highest priority to public and consumer interests without harming businesses.

It also said necessary measures would be taken in coordination with all concerned parties to ensure the supply of essential food products at reasonable prices.

Commerce Ministry Secretary Md Ataur Rahman Khan, Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission Chairman Nasir Uddoula and representatives of bakery product businesses attended the meeting.
