A 22-year-old university student was found hanging at a residence in the capital’s Hazaribagh area on Wednesday (September 16) afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Rafsad Mostafa Ruhin, a second-year student of Daffodil International University and son of Jamal Uddin Ripon of Sipahipara in Munshiganj Sadar.
Police recovered Ruhin’s body from a flat on the fifth floor of Jahanara Mansion in Jighatola, where he lived with his family. The body was later sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Ruhin’s cousin Imtiaz Kamal said the student had been in a relationship with a young woman for about a year. The family suspects that a dispute over the relationship may have preceded the incident.
Confirming the recovery, Hazaribagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Shamim Mia said police were alerted through the national emergency service 999 and recovered the body from the residence.
“Based on information from family members, the student apparently took his own life by hanging himself with a plastic rope from a ceiling fan in the dining room after becoming upset over a relationship issue,” the police officer said.
However, he added that the exact cause of death would be confirmed after receiving the autopsy report.
