The Election Commission (EC) has finalised 120 symbols for the upcoming parliamentary election, while keeping the ‘Boat’ symbol suspended.

According to a gazette notification issued on Wednesday, the EC also corrected a clerical error in Sub-rule 1 of Rule 9 of the Election Conduct Rules.

Of the 120 symbols, 60 have been reserved for the country’s 60 registered political parties, while the remaining symbols will be available for independent candidates.

The notification said symbols other than the suspended ‘Boat’ symbol and the ‘No’ symbol may be allocated to candidates, subject to availability.

The EC also removed the ‘No’ symbol from the provision barring the allocation of certain symbols. Under the previous wording, the ‘No’ symbol had also been mistakenly included among those that could not be allocated-- a provision the commission described as a clerical error.
