A mother has been accused of stabbing her three-and-a-half-year-old son to death and seriously injuring her eight-year-old daughter in Sakhipur, Tangail.

The incident took place late Wednesday night in the Khaliar Baid area of the upazila. Police have taken the mother, Akhlima Begum, into custody.

The deceased, Ashraful, was the son of Shaheen Mia and Akhlima. His eight-year-old sister, Sidratul, was seriously injured and taken to Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Family members said Akhlima mostly worked at a garment factory in Dhaka, so Ashraful was raised by Shaheen’s first wife, Nasima. The boy called Nasima “Borma” and reportedly called his biological mother “aunt.”

Locals suspect Akhlima may have been upset because her son called her “aunt.” However, the exact reason for the incident has not yet been confirmed. Family members said there had been no known dispute between Akhlima and Shaheen.

Shaheen said he had waited nearly 30 years for a son and demanded a proper investigation and justice. He also said Sidratul, Akhlima’s daughter from a previous marriage, was seriously injured in the attack.

Sakhipur police OC Murad Hossain said the incident occurred in an area between Sakhipur and Bhaluka police stations. Ashraful’s body remains at Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex. He said Akhlima was taken into police custody and legal proceedings are underway.
