BARISHAL, Sept 17: Prime Minister’s Political Adviser and Barishal-1 Constituency MP Zahir Uddin Swapon said the country now has an effective parliament instead of politics of street chaos. Opposition lawmakers have the freedom to criticise the government in parliament, he said.
He made the remarks at a tree-care and cleaning programme beside the Sarikal-Batajore Canal in Barishal on Thursday morning.
Zahir Uddin Swapon said the government wants parliament to become the centre of all political activities. If parliament remains the centre of politics, street chaos will not return, he said.
He also said the government wants to reform the police and make them servants of the people. The police were previously used as a political force, he alleged. “We want to restore the dignity and honour of the police,” he further said.
He also spoke about making the bureaucracy neutral and restoring confidence in the banking and stock markets.
He said canal excavation could help bring water to farmland and increase agricultural production. This can help the country move closer to becoming a food-exporting nation, he added.
