GAZIPUR, Sept 17: National University (NU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr ASM Amanullah on Thursday called for stronger cyber security skills among teachers and staff as the university expands its reliance on digital technology for administrative and academic work.

Speaking at a day-long cyber security training workshop titled ‘Enhancing Cyber Security Capability of National University Officials’ organised by the NU’s Institute of Forensic Science and Cyber Security (IFSCS) on the university’s main campus in Gazipur, Professor Dr ASM Amanullah said the institution plans to establish a “National Cyber Security Centre” to provide regular cyber security training nationwide and strengthen the university’s role in combating cyber risks and crime.

Pro-VC Professor Md Lutfar Rahman, Pro-VC Professor Dr Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Treasurer Professor Dr Md Nazmul Hossain spoke as special guests at the workshop. NU’s Head of the Institute of Forensic Science and Cyber Security Professor Dr Mohammad Bin Kashem chaired the programme.

“Cyber security is not solely the responsibility of the ICT department,” the VC said, urging all teachers and employees to use strong passwords, avoid suspicious links and emails, protect confidential information and practice responsible online behaviour.

The day-long workshop featured three technical sessions on cyber security, cyber fraud and the legal framework of cyber crime.

In the first session, Tanvir Hasan Joha, a cyber security specialist, cyber forensic prosecutor at the International Crimes Tribunal, and associate professor at BUBT, gave the keynote speech on ‘Protecting Your Devices and Network Systems from Security Threats’.

In the second session, Additional DIG of the Cyber Police Centre of the CID, Md Zahidul Islam, presented a discussion titled ‘Understanding Cyber Frauds and Security’.

In the third session, Police Staff College Director (Training) Md Mahbubul Alam gave speech on ‘Understanding the Legal Framework related to Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes’.
