DU penalises 64 students for exam misconduct

Dhaka University has barred 64 students from taking examinations for varying periods for resorting to unfair means and committing other offences during university examinations.

The students’ respective examinations have been cancelled, while they have also been barred from appearing in the next one, two or three examinations, depending on the nature of the offence.

The penalties were imposed based on a decision of the university’s Disciplinary Council on August 20 and an order issued at the Syndicate meeting on August 31.

The penalised students include undergraduate and postgraduate students from various departments, as well as students of professional and medical programmes.

A list published by the Office of the Controller of Examinations on September 7, signed by Controller of Examinations Dr Himadri Shekhar Chakraborty, contains the students’ names, registration numbers, sessions, roll numbers, departments, halls and types of punishment.

According to the document, three types of penalties were imposed — ‘Exam+1’, ‘Exam+2’ and ‘Exam+3’.

Under ‘Exam+1’, the examination in which the offence occurred is cancelled and the student is barred from taking the next examination. Under ‘Exam+2’, the relevant examination is cancelled and the student is barred from the next two examinations. Under ‘Exam+3’, the relevant examination is cancelled and the student is barred from the next three examinations.

The 64 students are from departments including Physics, Chemistry, Arabic, Law, Philosophy, English, Mass Communication and Journalism, Women and Gender Studies, and Geography and Environment.

Students of MBBS, Nursing and Health Technology programmes are also on the list.

The document said the penalised students may apply to the Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor for reduction of their punishment.
