Australia tightens student visa rules, bars dependents

Australia has announced tougher rules for foreign students, including a ban on bringing family members.

Home Minister Tony Burke said on Thursday (September 17) that international students will no longer be able to automatically bring their families to Australia. Those seeking to extend their stay must enroll in a higher-level academic course.

The BBC reported the move is aimed at controlling migration.

The rules for Working Holiday visas will also be tightened, with a ballot system to be introduced. However, the change will not apply to UK citizens.

The Working Holiday visa is a temporary visa that allows people aged 18 to 30, and up to 35 for some countries, to live, work and travel in Australia for up to 12 months.

"Migration is a strength for Australia, but it needs a high level of control," Burke said.
