Khulna to be developed as safe city: KCC administrator

KHULNA, Sept 20: Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju on Sunday called for initiatives to bring marginalised communities into the mainstream to build a safe and liveable Khulna.

“Bringing disadvantaged sections of society forward is crucial to achieving the goal of building a safe city,” he said, praising World Vision Bangladesh for working with KCC to protect children and vulnerable communities.

Manju was speaking as the chief guest at a programme at the CSS Ava Centre in the city this afternoon. World Vision Bangladesh organised the programme under its Khulna City Area Development Programmes-1 and 2 to celebrate wards declared free of child labour, school dropouts and child marriage, as well as progress in child protection activities.

Manju said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had advised authorities to undertake innovative initiatives. Following the advice, KCC has sought permission to use unused textile mill land to build a science park and planetarium, he said.

He said a list of 21 playgrounds and small futsal facilities had also been submitted for development, with work expected to begin soon.
“If these projects are implemented, the risk of mobile phone and drug addiction among children and adolescents will be reduced significantly,” he said.

World Vision Bangladesh Area Development Programme Officer Suravi Biswas presided over the programme.
