Mariam’s body returns to village for burial

The body of Mariam Khatun, second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, is being taken to her ancestral village in Shyamnagar for burial, nearly a decade after her family left the area for Dhaka.
The body was taken to Shyamnagar by ambulance on Monday (September 21) after an autopsy and other legal procedures were completed in Dhaka. Relatives and villagers are waiting for the body, while preparations have been made for her burial in Chowddorshi village of Gabura union.
Mariam’s family left Chowddorshi after their home was damaged by Cyclone Aila. They initially moved to Ishwaripur in Shyamnagar and later to Nawapara in Jashore before moving to Dhaka around eight to 10 years ago. The family later lived in Moghbazar and Pallabi-Kalshi.
Mariam’s elder aunt Munni Akter said the family wants a fair investigation into her death.
“We do not know why this happened. The mystery surrounding her death has not yet been revealed. We want justice,” she said.
Local resident Minarul Islam also demanded a proper investigation and justice, regardless of the accused’s position or influence.
Earlier on Sunday (September 20), police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a room of Flat No. 203, allocated to the MP, at NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Later, her father Masum Billah filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station accusing Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Begum and Obaidullah of abetting suicide.
Meanwhile, a human chain was held in Shyamnagar town on Monday demanding a fair investigation, disclosure of the actual circumstances and legal action against those responsible.
Mariam’s relatives and locals are now awaiting the investigation and autopsy reports. Her ancestral village is set to become her final resting place.
