Rani Mukerji’s mother Krishna Mukerji dies at 75

Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji’s mother Krishna Mukerji died on Tuesday at the age of 75.

Yash Raj Films, the production house of Rani’s husband Aditya Chopra, confirmed the news in a written statement.

“With a heavy heart, we announce that Rani Mukerji’s mother, Smt Krishna Mukerji, passed away this afternoon at the age of 75. We are grateful for your love, prayers and support. We request you to respect our privacy during this difficult time,” the statement said.

Krishna Mukerji was Bengali and had worked as a playback singer. She was married to filmmaker Ram Mukerji, and Rani was their daughter.

Rani followed her parents into the film industry and went on to achieve major success as an actress.

She has spoken openly on several occasions about her mother’s contribution to her life and career. Rani won the National Film Award for her performance in *Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway*.

She later said she drew inspiration from her mother while portraying the character of a mother in the film. However, the character, Sagarika, was based on a real woman whom Rani also researched for the role.
