Dhaka local buses accused of overcharging despite fare hike

Passengers in Dhaka have accused local bus operators of charging fares higher than the government-approved rates, with some reporting additional charges of Tk 5 to Tk 15 on different routes.
The complaints came on the first day after the government raised fares for diesel-powered buses and minibuses by 17 poisha per kilometre following a hike in fuel prices.
Passengers said some local buses had been charging Tk 5 to Tk 15 more on different routes since the fuel price increase.
“We do not run any business. We are employees. We have a fixed income, but our income has not increased,” one passenger said.
Another passenger said, “The regular fare is Tk 20, but they have already started charging an additional Tk 5. I noticed it from yesterday.”
Meanwhile, owners and workers of long-distance buses said they were still charging the previous fares as they had not yet received the new fare chart from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).
A counter manager of a transport company at Mohakhali Bus Terminal said, “We have not received any new instructions yet. Once the BRTA issues the chart, our owners’ association will inform us whether fares will be increased.”
A transport company owner also said they had not increased fares yet and would do so after receiving the BRTA’s approval or new fare chart.
Members of the public said higher bus fares following the fuel price increase would raise the cost of living. They said the rise in fuel and transport costs amid already high prices of essential commodities would further increase their hardship.
