MP Nazrul gets another 4-day remand after DB sought 7 days

A Dhaka court has granted another four days’ remand for Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam in a case filed over the alleged abetment of his second wife Mariam’s suicide.

After completing his previous four-day remand, Nazrul was produced before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. DB Inspector Mohammad Salauddin, the investigation officer, sought seven more days’ remand for questioning.

After hearing the plea, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ripon Hossain granted four days’ remand, prosecution sources confirmed.

Police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a flat at NAM Bhaban opposite the parliament complex on September 20. Later that night, Nazrul and his first wife Maksuda Islam were taken into police custody.

Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, subsequently filed a case against Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman, accusing them of abetting her suicide.

A court initially granted Nazrul four days’ remand and Maksuda one day. The case was later transferred to the DB for investigation.

According to the case statement, Mariam, 19, married Nazrul in June and had told her family that she faced physical and mental abuse from Nazrul and Maksuda after the marriage.
