Third water treatment plant planned in Rangunia, to supply 100m litres daily

Chattogram WASA is set to implement its third water treatment project in Rangunia, with a daily production capacity of 100 million litres.

The project, named Karnaphuli Water Treatment Plant Project-3, will be financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), said Chattogram WASA Managing Director Engineer Selim Md Zane Alam at an event on Thursday.

JICA has agreed to finance the project, while a delegation from the agency has already visited the project site and started a feasibility study, the WASA chief said.

The plant will be built in the Sarafbhata area near Godown Bridge in Rangunia, adjacent to the ongoing Karnaphuli Water Treatment Plant Project-2.

The new plant will have a daily production capacity of 100 million litres.

A major advantage of the project is that no new pipeline will be required. Water produced by the new plant will be supplied to the city through the existing pipeline of Karnaphuli Water Treatment Plant Project-2.

JICA previously financed Karnaphuli Water Treatment Plant Project-2 in 2016, with a daily production capacity of 143 million litres. The project cost Tk 4,491.15 crore, including Tk 3,623.28 crore from JICA, Tk 844.80 crore from the Bangladesh government and Tk 23.07 crore from Chattogram WASA.

Since March 16, 2021, water for Project-2 has been collected from the Karnaphuli River in Sarafbhata, treated and supplied to customers in Chattogram through a reservoir in Nasirabad and an elevated tank in Halishahar.

Chattogram WASA's Karnaphuli Water Treatment Plant Project-1 is also located in Rangunia.

Project-1 draws water from the Karnaphuli River in Pomra, while Project-2 collects water from the river in Sarafbhata. Water for Project-3 will also be drawn from the Karnaphuli River in Sarafbhata.
