The newly constituted minimum wage board for the readymade garment (RMG) sector has begun its inaugural meeting to recommend a new minimum wage structure for workers amid ongoing labour unrest and protests demanding higher pay.

Senior District Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman, Chairman of the board, is presiding over the session, which commenced at 11:00 AM on Wednesday (November 4) at the Minimum Wage Board conference room in Segunbagicha, Dhaka.

A press release issued by the industrial branch of the board stated that the meeting was convened to formulate recommendations for the minimum wage rates of RMG workers and employees in accordance with labour laws.

The government reconstituted the general minimum wage board and established a separate wage board specifically for the garment sector on November 1 amid escalating worker unrest. Director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) ABM Shamsuddin serves as the owner representative, while General Secretary of the Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation Babul Akhter represents the workers.

Representatives from both factory owners and workers collaborate directly with the board during the wage-fixing process. Under Section 139 of the Labour Act, the government can initiate the process to revise minimum wages upon receiving applications from employers, workers, or both sides. Recent amendments to labour legislation reduced the mandatory wage revision cycle from five years to three years.

Meanwhile, garment workers have been demonstrating across various areas in the capital and surrounding industrial zones for several days, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000. Clashes broke out between police and protesting workers in parts of Dhaka and Gazipur on Wednesday following road blockades.
