'Faith in Allah' to return to Constitution: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the phrase “full faith and trust in Almighty Allah” will be returned to the Constitution as part of the proposed constitutional amendments.

He made the remarks on Sunday (September 27) evening after the third meeting of the special committee on constitutional amendments at the media centre of the Jatiya Sangsad.

Salahuddin said the July National Charter remains the committee’s priority, while commitments included in the election manifesto would also be considered. He said restoring the phrase in the Constitution is an election manifesto pledge.

The minister said proposed changes could involve the preamble and Articles 8, 48, 56 and 142. If such changes are made, a referendum would be required before presidential assent, he added.

On the caretaker government system, Salahuddin said a proposal had been made by the BNP to require a referendum for any future amendment to the relevant constitutional provisions, so that a future parliament could not easily abolish the system.

He stated the committee is making efforts to submit its report to Parliament by December. Based on the report, the Law Ministry is expected to prepare a bill, which could be placed before Parliament during its first session in January next year.

The bill would then go through parliamentary discussion and amendments before being finalised through a referendum, according to the minister.
