Dengue takes 6 more lives

Six people died of dengue in the 24 hours to Sunday morning, while 2,158 patients were hospitalised with the mosquito-borne disease during the period, the highest single-day admission figure recorded this year. The previous highest daily admission figure was recorded last Tuesday, when 1,872 dengue patients were hospitalised.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the death toll from dengue this year reached 225 as of 8am Sunday. Of the total, 128 deaths were recorded in September alone.

According to the latest DGHS bulletin, 311 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in the Dhaka North City Corporation area and 197 in the Dhaka South City Corporation area during the past 24 hours. Another 356 patients were admitted to hospitals in other parts of Dhaka division.

The bulletin said 227 patients were admitted in Barishal, 345 in Chattogram, 329 in Khulna, 132 in Mymensingh, 176 in Rajshahi, 73 in Rangpur and 12 in Sylhet. Meanwhile, 1,755 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals after receiving treatment during the same 24-hour period, according to the DGHS.

A total of 73,694 people have been hospitalised with dengue so far this year, while 68,006 have recovered and been discharged from hospitals. The DGHS has been maintaining records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000. The highest number of dengue hospitalisations was recorded in 2023, when 321,179 people were admitted to hospitals with the disease. That year also saw the highest number of dengue deaths, at 1,705.
