31 DU students get Buddhist scholarships

A total of 31 students of Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies at  Dhaka University (DU) have received scholarships from Bangladesh Buddhist Heritage Research Trust.

The scholarships were given to undergraduate and master's students from different academic years.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam handed over the scholarship cheques at a programme at RC Majumdar Arts Auditorium on Sunday.

Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies Alumni Association and Bangladesh Buddhist Heritage Research Trust jointly organised the event.

Professor Dr Dileep Kumar Barua, president of the alumni association, chaired the programme. Dean of the Faculty of Arts Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Sarkar attended as a special guest.

Speaking at the event, DU VC congratulated the scholarship recipients. He said students should become responsible citizens and skilled professionals and contribute to society.

He also said universities could not depend only on government funding. Alumni and private organisations should support education and research, he added.
