Asif Mahmud challenges ACC briefings in HC

Former interim government adviser and National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging the legality of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) press briefings on allegations against him.

He filed the petition through his lawyer Zahirul Islam Musa on Monday. The petition seeks an order barring the ACC from holding press briefings on pending inquiries or investigations and asks the court to declare its September 2 and 13 briefings unlawful.

The petition also seeks withdrawal of statements made in the briefings with equal prominence. It names the ACC chairman, its deputy director and assistant director concerned, and public relations officials as respondents.

Asif claims the briefings damaged his reputation and amounted to a media trial. He has denied the allegations under investigation, while the ACC has said the claims will be verified through its inquiry.
