Husband, mother-in-law get life terms for wife’s murder

A court in Faridpur has sentenced a man and his mother to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Sumi (Girira), in Boalmari.

Faridpur District and Sessions Judge-1 Mohammad Badiuzzaman handed down the verdict on Monday, also fining the two Tk10,000 each, with one year of rigorous imprisonment in default.

The convicts are Atiar Rahman Talukder, 28, and his mother, Mocha Rahena Begum, 50, of Keshrail village in Boalmari. Atiar was absent from the court, while Rahena was present.

The court acquitted Sumi’s father-in-law, Khalilur Rahman Talukder, 55, as the charges against him were not proved.

According to the case documents, Sumi married Atiar in 2010. Her family gave gold ornaments and cash at the time of the marriage. She was allegedly subjected to domestic abuse after becoming pregnant, including being forced to take medication that caused a miscarriage.

On May 11, 2011, Sumi’s brother was informed by the imam of Keshrail Mosque that she had died. Relatives later found her body on a bed inside the house.

Her brother, Md Sarwar Molla, subsequently filed a murder case with Boalmari Police Station against her husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law.

Additional Public Prosecutor Chowdhury Zahid Hasan said the court delivered the verdict after 15 years of proceedings based on witness testimony and evidence.
