Nirvana honoured at 2026 VMAs

Grunge legends Nirvana were honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, recognising the band’s lasting influence on music videos and popular culture.

Surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear accepted the award during Sunday’s ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Presenting the honour, Public Enemy’s Chuck D praised Nirvana’s music videos for helping define an era. Novoselic said the band never imagined its music and visual style would continue to resonate with audiences decades later.

The ceremony also featured tributes to late music icons Dolly Parton and George Michael. Kacey Musgraves performed “I Will Always Love You” in tribute to Parton, while Sombr, Raye and Teddy Swims performed songs associated with George Michael.

The 2026 VMAs were hosted by Snoop Dogg and held on September 27.
