No political identity will be considered for criminals: IGP

Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir has directed police to take drug dealers, terrorists and extortionists under strict legal action, saying no political identity should be considered in dealing with criminals.

He gave the instruction at the monthly crime review meeting for August at Police Headquarters on Tuesday.

The IGP said the police’s “zero-tolerance” policy against drugs would continue. He also stressed community policing and public participation in combating drug-related crimes.

He directed police to take appropriate legal action against juvenile offenders and ensure security for the upcoming Durga Puja. He also instructed officers to take measures to prevent rumours and misinformation surrounding the festival.

The meeting was chaired by Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Md Sayedur Rahman. Metropolitan police commissioners, range DIGs and district superintendents of police joined virtually.

Sayedur Rahman directed officers to collect information on juvenile gangs and identify whether influential people were backing them. He also instructed each police unit to prepare security plans for Durga Puja and ensure proper use of body-worn cameras while on duty.

The meeting reviewed the overall crime situation in August, including robbery, dacoity, murder, rape, attacks on police and abduction cases. The progress of pending arrest warrants, investigations and trials, as well as conviction rates, was also discussed.
